Research
UNC is at the forefront of global health research. Home to an internationally recognized and well-funded faculty, the nation’s #1 public school of public health, numerous research centers, institutes and programs, and an administration committed to enhancing the university’s global reach, UNC is a leader in global health.
UNC receives over $600 million in NIH funding, much of which supports international networks such as the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), Fogarty Center, and the Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI). Furthermore, our top-ranked School of Public Health will soon be renamed the Gillings School of Global Public Health, thanks to a $50 million gift from Dennis and Joan Gillings.
One of UNC’s greatest strengths, and what attracts many top students and faculty to the university, is its tradition of a highly cooperative, interdisciplinary research environment. UNC has received more multidisciplinary NIH Roadmap grants than any other research university.
The creation of the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases embodies this interdisciplinary dynamic and formalizes the cooperative relationship among various schools, programs, and global health initiatives across campus. These partnerships enable UNC to do more to reduce the spread of diseases, improve healthcare delivery systems, and address global health disparities.
